Some software updates just add a few features, fix some issues, and increase the version number.
Other releases represent something bigger.
Spire 4 is one of those releases.
Spire 4 introduces many new features. We’ve added new tools and improved Spire Desktop, Spire Web, reporting, accounting, inventory, sales, payroll, production, and other parts of the application our users rely on every day.
But just talking about new features would leave out an important part of the story.
Spire 4 is a major step forward for the platform. Some changes are easy to spot, while others work behind the scenes and might not be immediately noticeable.
And that’s intentional.
Some Changes You’ll Notice Right Away
We’ve updated the user interface with a modern framework and improved the desktop experience. Now, users can log in with their email address, open module tabs in separate windows, and enjoy improvements throughout the app that make daily tasks easier. We’ve also grouped some modules together in the Spire menu and added useful visual updates like dark mode.
Some of these changes might seem small on their own, but together they help modernize Spire while keeping it practical and easy to use—something we’ve always valued.
We don’t make changes just for the sake of appearances. Our goal is to keep improving Spire without losing the familiar, efficient experience businesses count on every day.
And Then There Are the Changes You Don’t See
This area is where Spire 4 gets particularly interesting.
At our 2026 Partner Conference, we talked about what we like to call the work “under the hood.”
Switching to a 64-bit application is part of this. So is upgrading to Qt 6, which allows for a more modern user interface. We’ve also updated the Crystal Reports runtime, Python, and web dependencies and continued to improve the database technology.
These aren’t necessarily features that someone will notice while entering a sales order. But they matter.
Technology changes. Operating systems change. Security needs change. The way businesses use software changes. And people still expect to access information from different devices and environments. Spire needs to keep up with these expectations while staying reliable for the businesses that use it now. That’s an important balance.
Spire Web Continues to Develop
One of the most visible examples of that evolution is Spire Web. Spire 4 brings substantially more functionality into the web environment.
It includes a new Calendar module, Inventory Count, Job Cost, more Customer and Inventory details, better communication across Spire, and mobile camera support in Inventory. Sales continues to expand on the web, adding recurring-order improvements, Job Cost information, order processing and reprocessing, Kit Options, Divisions, and a Sales Items List. We’ve also introduced a new Point of Sale module for Spire Web, along with support for payment integrations.
This isn’t about recreating Spire Desktop screen-for-screen in a browser or leaving the desktop behind. We’re still improving Spire Desktop while adding more options in Spire Web. It’s about making Spire easier to use in a browser or on a mobile device wherever it makes sense and making those workflows even better.
The question isn’t really “desktop or web?” anymore. It’s about asking, “Where does the work need to happen?” Sometimes work happens at a desk with several monitors. Other times it’s at a counter, in a warehouse, or on a phone or tablet away from the office.
Spire 4 moves us further toward supporting that reality.
A New Direction for Reporting
Reporting is another area where Spire 4 shows us the direction the platform is taking.
Crystal Reports isn’t disappearing. In fact, Crystal has been upgraded for Spire 4 and remains supported. But Crystal was designed mainly for desktop use, which limits what you can do when running reports in browsers, on mobile devices, on macOS, or directly from a server.
That’s why we’ve introduced Spire Reports.
Spire Reports is built on modern web technologies and provides a way to generate printable, emailable, and exportable PDF documents across platforms. It isn’t intended to replace business intelligence tools; it’s for the operational reporting traditionally handled through Crystal. The main advantage is flexibility. You’ll be able to run reports from Windows or macOS desktops, web and mobile devices, or directly on the server. The new Spire Reports Designer is available when connected to Spire Cloud or Spire VA.
And that brings us to another important piece of Spire 4.
Meet the Spire Virtual Appliance
The Spire VA (Virtual Appliance) might not be the most obvious change in this release, but it’s important.
In the past, on-premise installations could vary widely from one customer to another. Different servers, setups, and environments meant installation, upgrades, troubleshooting, and support could vary widely.
Spire VA gives us a way to standardize that environment. Simply put, it creates a separate, predictable environment for Spire and helps us deliver Spire the same way regardless of the environment. For partners and customers, this means more consistent deployments, fewer setup variables, and an environment that’s easier to move, maintain, and support.
You don’t have to use Spire VA to run Spire 4. But increasingly, some features work best with—or even require—this setup. Web reporting, some printing situations, and other functions are examples, and we expect that list to keep growing.
That’s why we view Spire VA as more than just another way to deploy Spire. It’s part of the foundation we’re building for the future.
Small Details Matter Too
Big architectural changes are important, but anyone who uses business software every day knows something else:
Sometimes, it’s the small improvements that make a difference, and Spire 4 has plenty of those.
Now, customers can automatically transfer UDF information to new Sales Orders. Inventory users get a Vendor Prices tab that shows vendors and prices together, plus MSRP vendor prices. Sales admins can set maximum discounts for each user. The module menu has been consolidated to have Production History, Purchase History, and Sales History in their main modules. Pop-out tabs and copy functions have been added throughout the program to provide less repetitive workflows.
There’s also new Contra functionality, which lets you transfer balances between AR and AP when needed.
Payroll now supports multiple CRA RP accounts, and Vendor functionality now supports multiple RZ accounts.
There are new reports, updates to reporting, better performance, and many other improvements throughout the product.
Not every enhancement will matter to every business. But that’s also the point.
Spire supports distributors, manufacturers, and other growing businesses with different workflows. A feature that seems small in the release notes might solve a daily problem for someone else.
Spire 4 Is a Foundation
If there’s one thing we want you to know about Spire 4, it’s this: Spire 4 isn’t the finish line. It’s a foundation.
Yes, this is a major release with lots of new features. But much of our work focused on making sure the technology underneath is ready for the future. That matters because our customers aren’t looking for technology just for the sake of being trendy. They want software that’s stable, practical, and ready for real-world use. That’s the kind of customer we attract, and it’s the kind of product we plan to keep building.
There’s a lot to discover in Spire 4, and we’ll dive into some of these new features at the Spire Open Houses this fall.
